"So exactly how is this 'Good News'?"

Well, here we go:

We are NOT saved by how good we are, or how much we do. Not even a little bit. Presenting the very best of your good deeds to God to show your "worthiness" is basically like bringing a dirty diaper to the bank teller and expecting it to get deposited to your account as a million bucks. It's completely absurd.

So how ARE we saved?

We are saved by trusting in God's goodness, and what He has done. God has provided us a way of escaping judgment...and he's provided the means--the ONLY means--to be in relationship with Him--for eternity!

God, because of His love for us, paid the penalty for our sinfulness, through Jesus' death and resurrection. He's the only one who can save us. Best news is, it's a gift, free and clear!

For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.  (1 Peter 3:18)

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.  (Romans 6:23)

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us,  (Romans 5:8)

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.  (2 Corinthians 5:21)

"That's too easy. Doesn't that seem too good to be true?"
